Why it caught on: in "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV" (season 2, 2001) SpongeBob has Mermaid Man's belt set to M for mini, and Patrick insists it's M for wumbo: "I wumbo, you wumbo, he-she-me wumbo... it's first grade, SpongeBob!" The bit became shorthand for explaining nonsense with complete confidence.
